Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Also termed: Adult-Onset Diabetes • Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes • T2D
A chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia resulting from progressive insulin resistance and inadequate insulin secretion.
- Extreme confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty staying awake
- Fruity-smelling breath, deep rapid breathing (Kussmaul breathing)
- Severe nausea, continuous vomiting, and inability to keep fluids down
- Rapid, severe blood sugar spikes (> 20 mmol/L) accompanied by dehydration
Clinical Overview of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body cells become resistant to the normal effects of insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter cells. Over time, elevated blood sugar damages blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, and eyes. In Mauritius, it is one of the leading contributors to cardiovascular disease and renal impairment.
